I explained to my daughter that it was because Al Gore, campaigning for the presidency, was in town. This led to a political discussion of sorts, you know, the limited kind you can have with a five year old.

At some point, I mentioned that I hoped Gore's V.P. choice (I called the job "the president's number one helper, because she didn't understand V.P.) would be a woman. My daughter was shocked to learn that no "girl" had ever been president. She just couldn't believe it and, you know, her outrage just reminded me to be outraged!

She decided to write him a letter. She dictated, and I wrote exactly what she said. First, she said it's weird to be writing to a vice-president (and how does someone get to be president), but I hope you got to your hotel place okay and I really hope you win the election. Maybe you could come to my house and play sometime because I have lots of cool toys. Is it true no girl has ever been president? That's what my mommy told me. You know, that's just not fair. Those boys need to learn to share. Or is the boy section just going first? Well, I hope you will pick a woman as your vice-president. Try it - as my mommy always says, you never know until you try!

LOL.

He wrote back, standard stuff about his background, how he'd always been an advocate for women, blah, blah, blah. My daughter's school included the whole letter in their school newsletter.

Anyway, I thought the "those boys need to learn to share thing" might make you laugh (I AM an Obama supporter after many months of agonizing indecision because of the war thing - because I was at Camp Casey with Cindy Sheehan in 2005, sleeping in a tent outside George Bush's ranch and all, but I totally respect the disappointment so many people feel about Hillary, including my mom and my sister.)

Anyway, hope that made you smile.NOLA radfemhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11905750843042076110noreply@blogger.com
